On June 7th the ACVFD conducted a HAZMAT drill on a local farm in our first due. Firefighters used continuing in house training along with classroom training to identify a potential issue at a local farm. A commonly used chemical to fertilize farm land was the target of the drill. Firefighters from the ACVFD, Strawpump, Westmoreland City, Herminie, and High Park VFD came together to rescue a victim caught in a simulated chemical leak. These firefighters along with the Westmoreland County Hazmat Team, Murrysville Medic One Support Unit, Rescue 14 EMS, North Huntingdon EMS, Hempfield Township Emergency Management Team worked for 3 hours to successfully complete the simulation.
Chief Thoma and the ACVFD would like to thank the Farm Owner for providing the opportunity for us to train. We would also like to thank all of the Firefighters, EMS Crews, the Hazmat Team and all other agencies involved for taking time to train and hone their skills with us.
